Will Run for Wine {& Chicken Bog}

In exactly 46 days / 6.5 weeks, the Kiawah Half Marathon will be here.

Motivation to run it?

Patrick has promised us {thanks for the idea, Cameron!} a big ol' batch of Chicken Bog after the race is over. If you've never had Chicken Bog, you may not understand, but it's definitely worth running 13.1 miles for. Best part? I'll have absolutely zero guilt when I go back for seconds... and thirds...

Well, it might be a tie between the Chicken Bog & the new course for 2016. My least favorite portion of the race {miles 10.5 - 12.5} have been eliminated. That awful out and back going towards the Ocean Course? Gone. The hardest portion of the race for me {basically the last half of it} will be run on the roads that I typically run around on when I'm down on Kiawah. It'll be on my home turf. The course changes seem fantastic and I'm excited to see how it changes race day for me.

Running is... going.

Now that the weather is finally {finally} starting to cool off down here in the south, it's a lot more bearable to run outside again. I am 100% a cold weather runner. I know this. I prefer it to be a crisp 30 degree morning when I go run. You don't exactly get that in Columbia, SC that often. But of course now that the weather is perfect, the post-work daylight hours are about to disappear.

Running also hadn't been going well lately. I was supposed to run a 10K this past weekend but scrapped it at the last minute. I felt pretty guilt about doing that until I went out for a 6 mile run on Sunday. I gave up about 3.75ish miles into it because it just wasn't going and I couldn't figure out why. I was well rested, hydrated, not hungry, my body wasn't tired... but I kept stopping to walk.

Half an hour after I gave up? I realized it was my shoes. They were long over due to be replaced but I had kept putting it off. As always, new shoes make a HUGE difference.

Plus, I always love having a good excuse to do a little shopping for some new shoes.

All that is to say that the half marathon training is going.

I've had to go back and read some of my blog posts about race recaps and runs that I was extremely happy with and training runs that have gone well. My instagram has provided some motivation because there are plenty of post-run pictures that remind me that I can do this. I've done it. I can do it again.

And when I do it again? I'm going straight back to the house for some wine and a whole lot of Chicken Bog! Probably a good long nap, too.

  1. Every time I signed up for a half, I always bought myself new shoes - it always made training so much better! I've never had chicken bog before, but it definitely seems like my kind of dish!

  4. i had to google chicken bog but it looks yummy! and not super unhealthy, so i don't think it's a good post race meal. you need like really awful and bad for you food that tastes amazing! haha. and duh wine is always good too.
    sometimes running just doesn't go for me. and that's okay. reading about my thoughts or seeing instagram pictures helps, but sometimes you just need to... not. and that's okay! and sometimes you buy new shoes. also okay!

  5. New shoes make a huge difference. My mom always told me to replace my tennis shoes every 6 months. Turns out thats really about the most you get out of them if you walk in them everyday. Keep up the hard work!
